Is our baby eating enough? Is this much crying normal? How do I know when she is really sick? This hefty, 671-page guide to your baby's first year is brought to you by the creators of the bestselling What to Expect When You're Expecting. The three authors, all mothers themselves, are calm, clear, and encouraging as they tackle the first year of child-rearing, month by month. The easy-to-absorb, chronological format includes sections such as "What Your Baby May Be Doing," "What You Can Expect at This Month's Checkups," "Feeding Your Baby This Month," "What You May Be Concerned About," and "What It's Important to Know."

Part Two addresses special concerns such as illness, first aid do's and don'ts, the low-birthweight baby, the adopted baby, becoming a father, and sibling relationships. You'll also find discussions of breastfeeding and bottlefeeding, selecting a physician for the baby, diapers and clothing, safety, and many ways of stimulating the baby's development. The recipes for babies and toddlers in Part Three are useful, as are the recommended home remedies; charts on common childhood illnesses; height and weight; and the thorough index. (A particular strength of the book is the authors' careful attention to diet and nutrition for both mother and baby, incorporating the American Academy of Pediatrics' latest recommendations on infant nutrition.) While some of the authors' perspectives are controversial (such as whether to let your baby "cry it out" or not), this book remains one of the most comprehensive resources for new parents as they toddle through their baby's first year.

5Excellent Resource For New Parents  Aug 20, 2008
I love this book! It is literally a BIBLE for new parents! It's well worth the money! I would recommend this book 100% of the time.

4What to expect the first year  Aug 16, 2008
Interesting, humorous, comprehensive, very helpful. Recommend to read through it during pregnancy. You won't have time for reading after delivery.

2Too biased, opinionated  Aug 14, 2008
It's obvious this book is full of helpful facts, but I couldn't get past the constant insertion of biased comments from the authors. In the Six-Month-Baby chapter they call parents "week nerved" (mispelling is theirs) because they don't use the Cry It Out method. There is also a constant use of negative adjectives like a babies "pathetic" hand wave to get parents attention (also in the Six-Month chapter).
I may refer to this book occasionally, but I will not recommend it to anyone. It will probably collect dust on my book shelf.

5A TERRIFIC reference at your fingertips!  Aug 07, 2008
First off, I would like to say that I was NOT a big fan of What to Expect When Expecting, so I was pleasantly surprised that I really enjoyed What to Expect the First Year. Even my husband found himself reading it!

I received this book as a gift and absolutely LOVED it. It gives you developmental stages for every chapter by age. They break it down further to: what they should be doing at 1 month, 2 month, and so on, what they might be doing, and what advanced kids might be doing. I've found myself checking out each chapter so I can get an idea of what to expect (as the title states).

This book also includes illnesses, what to do, cuts/scrapes/etc. as well as recipes, different scenarios that come about and what you could do when facing the same challenges.

I can't tell you how much this book has come in handy when being a first time mom and your kid is sick. It calmed me down as I was calling the doctor because it gave suggestions on what to do in the meantime while you are awaiting your child's doctor's appointment. I'm not saying it's a cure-all, but it does give you enough information that it quells some of your worries.

I don't want to mislead anyone into thinking that this book is "THE GUIDE" to everything, but it is a very good resource to help you along your parenting journey. Obviously this book is not going to speak for all kids, but it certainly helps out.

I bought the next stage What to Expect the Toddler Years because I loved the first one so much.
